I have been focusing on listening more closely to my inner voice. You know, the one that keeps getting drowned out by distractions.
As you might know, if you’ve been following and reading my pieces, I am not a “meditator.” I don’t sit on a cushion with my eyes closed, incense burning, humming out “Oms.” (Note: I really wish I did have this practice.)
My “meditation” takes the form of asking questions and listening for the answers. The answers come in various ways. Sometimes, it’s an immediate visceral reaction to the question. Other times, I wake up in the middle of the night with a very clear answer.
For example, I never intended to write How to Craft Your Chapter X, but I kept getting nudges that demanded I write the book. More recently, I was feeling (not thinking) that my body needed to be pushed further in my exercise program.
It came in the form of a disturbance, an urge to move, to do, to fulfill something. My answer was to add another day of resistance training, and that feeling that had been picking at me was silenced.
There are so many distractions around us that keep us from connecting with the part of ourselves that holds so much good and needed information. Everyone has their distraction(s) of choice, so there’s no need to list them. You know what yours are.
All I will say is that the distractions might come in the form of an electronic device or an internal feeling of fear that keeps us from hearing those quieter voices.
Our body contains great wisdom, if only we stop and listen.
